Do I need a referral?
No. You can book directly. If you already have a referral from your GP, midwife or specialist, bring it, because it saves time.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a GP referral?+
No. In New Zealand you can book a physiotherapy appointment directly. You do not need to see your GP first and you do not need a letter from a specialist.
Will I need an internal examination?+
Not usually. Real-time ultrasound is performed through the lower abdomen while you stay fully clothed, and biofeedback lets us assess muscle activation, coordination and control without an internal examination in most people. If additional assessment would change what we recommend, we will explain exactly why and ask for your consent. You can decline any part of an appointment, at any point, for any reason.
Does ACC cover pelvic floor physiotherapy?+
Sometimes. ACC covers injury, not illness. Maternal birth injuries sustained on or after 1 October 2022 may be covered, as may an accidental injury such as a coccyx fracture from a fall. Erectile dysfunction, premature ejaculation, age-related bladder leakage, overactive bladder and prolapse from a birth before 1 October 2022 are not covered and are paid privately. How much does it cost?+
Our full fee schedule is published on the Fees and ACC page. You will be told the cost of any recommended plan before you agree to it, and you will not be charged for anything you have not agreed to. $230 for an initial assessment, $140 for a follow-up
Can I bring someone with me?+
Yes. You may bring a support person or a partner, and you may ask for a chaperone at any appointment. Some people prefer to come alone. Both are common and neither is a problem.
Is what I tell you confidential?+
Yes. Your clinical records are held under the Health Information Privacy Code. We do not write to your GP or anyone else without your permission.
Do you offer online consultations?+
Online video consultations suit an initial conversation, education and home programme reviews, though they cannot include hands-on or ultrasound assessment. Yes, $230
